Number Of People Speaking
The approximate number of native speakers is calculated to be four million people. However there is speculation that there are over nine million people worldwide who speak it as a primary or secondary language.
There are two main dialects spoken within the North-Eastern and South-Western regions of Belarus. There is also a dialect of Middle Belarusian and one spoken in the West Palyesian region.
The North-Eastern form of dialect is recognized by a “soft sounding R” or “strong akanye”, whereas the South-Western dialect uses “hard sounding” R’s and “moderate akanye”.
The dialect of the West Palyesian region is closer to Ukrainian and is more linguistically distinct from other dialects.
Belarusian is spoken primarily in Belarus and Poland as one of their official languages. However it is also spoken in Ukraine and in communities around the world.
Some Fun Facts About Belarusian

The Belarusian alphabet is a variant based on Cyrillic script; its modern form was identified in 1918 and contains 32 letters.
Due to the political situation and conflicts in the area, Belarusian grammar was only standardized and adopted in 1959, with small amendments being put into place in 1985.
